I've spent years helping people read their DNA. This is what I kept noticing.
After more than a decade working in genetic genealogy, I could see that most people saw DNA as the ultimate record of who they were. It was the source of all of their best and worst qualities. End of story.
But then I came across an Emory University study showing that kids who knew their family stories were measurably more resilient. Not just happier. More resilient. I couldn't stop thinking about why. What if the stories weren't just comforting? What if knowing where you came from actually changed something in your DNA? I had a theory and I took a deep dive into the research on epigenetics — the science of how our experiences and environment influence which parts of our DNA actually switch on.
